Our Autumn golfing event was a friendly match against a team from Vikla. We elected to play just 12 holes so that the round wasn't too exhausting and, unlike last year, to enable us to have lunch at some time in the afternoon! The playing format (4 ball - better ball) was also arranged so that everyone would be able to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and weather without worrying too much about the occasional wayward shot. The Vikla team provided excellent company both on the course and afterwards at lunch and ensured that an enjoyable time was had by all.
The course was its usual demanding self - the fairways were fast and the greens were a little slow. However, these were relatively minor variables in our games where hooks and slices were not totally unknown. The handicapping system worked well and the teams were evenly matched so the score cards were checked and re-checked before the results were announced before lunch. Winners of the men's pairs were Terry Duggan and Jeremy Earle with 31 points and the day's overall winners were Molly Fortescue and Liz Moses with 32 points (a note has been sent to these ladies' Handicap Secretaries!). There was a 'nearest to the pin' competition on each of the par three holes and these were won by Hilton Moses, John Daniel, Tony Mavroudes (Vikla) and Peter Marchant (Vikla).
Once the prizes had been presented by Mrs Chairman, Annie, we settled down to a very enjoyable lunch and continued our de-briefing and analysis of the day's play. The play became better and better as time went on so, when it came to making our farewells, some of our midst were contemplating a second career in golf. A good day out!
